Yemen: Number of Dead Rises in Aftermath of Bombing of MSF-Supported Hospital in Northern Yemen

A patient critically injured last week in a projectile strike on a hospital supported by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontierès (MSF) in northern Yemen died Saturday night, raising the total number of people killed in the attack to six.

The blast that hit the Shiara hospital in Razeh on January 10, in northern Yemen, initially killed five people and injured eight, two of them critically. While those critically wounded were transferred to an intensive care unit in Saada, the rest were treated on the premises of the hospital in Razeh.

The patient who died on Saturday had been in the intensive care unit for six days after being admitted in extremely critical condition.

"We extend our condolences to the victim's family, while we again condemn the fact that a hospital has been targeted as part of the conflict ravaging this country for the last ten months,” said Juan Prieto, general coordinator of MSF projects in Yemen.

“We need to repeat over and over again that the civilian population, medical staff and medical facilities should be protected during this conflict. One week after the explosion, patients and health workers are still scared to go back to the hospital. Attacking hospitals inflicts a terrible toll for the population to pay.”
