Afghanistan: Influx of Wounded Patients in Kunduz

A trauma center run by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Kunduz, Afghanistan, is treating an influx of wounded patients today. Guilhem Molinie, MSF country representative for Afghanistan, gave the following account:

"MSF’s medical team in Kunduz is urgently treating dozens of wounded after heavy fighting in the city. Since early this morning, the trauma center has received 102 wounded patients and is now at full capacity. Thirty-six patients arrived in critical condition, with severe abdominal and head injuries. Our surgeons have been working nonstop to treat patients with gunshot wounds. We have added 18 extra beds to bring the total bed capacity to 110 in order to cope with the unprecedented level of admissions.

"MSF’s hospital is the only facility of its kind in the whole northeastern region of Afghanistan providing free high-level life- and limb-saving trauma care. Our doctors treat all people according to their medical needs and do not make distinctions based on a patient’s race, ethnicity, religious beliefs or political affiliation."
